Our backstory

Picture
Javanna Plummer, Rwebel's founder, first called herself a "rebel with a cause" when she created her Rebellious Woman blog in May 2017. Almost two years later, she decided to expand that blog into an online magazine following encouragement from family and friends. While considering the expansion, Javanna knew she first needed a name. To her, giving her idea a name would give it legitimacy. But what would the name be?

A two-time published author, a poet, and an all around storyteller, Javanna wanted something creative; innovative; narrative. Then she got it: rwebel. Rwebel is pronounced like the word “rebel" but is spelled with a "w" to solidify this mission of embracing difference, and the name symbolizes Javanna's pivot into a publisher.

As a certified "Rwebel in Chief," Javanna intends to inspire media equity and narrative reclamation through innovative storytelling. Keep reading to learn how she will create this vision. Learn more about our brands below.

overview

Rwebel Media's vision of "narrative reclamation" will be achieved through our eclectic brands. With each brand, Rwebel Media uses an interactive and immersive approach to storytelling that aligns with our pledge to embrace difference.

Although these are each separate brands, there will be some overlap. That way, Rwebel Media will be fully committed to narrative reclamation by immortalizing stories of under served communities. Xscape will be a different publisher because it will encourage self publishing. Rwebel Mag will be a different magazine because it will incorporate a podcast and talk about artivism. Rwebel Radio will be a different podcast because it will be a short yet concise analysis of big issues. Through Rwebel Media's eclectic brands, we will spark forward-thinking about storytelling.

Our Multimedia department creates multimedia stories for Rwebel Media and produces our Rwebel Radio, a monthly podcast focused on using Black art to narrate conversations about Black culture. In ten-ish minutes, a Rwebel with a cause will journey toward enlightenment! Episodes will be broken into 3 segments:
  • Art Echo: In an opening segment, audiences hear about selected art. (Run time: approx. 2 minutes)
  • Culture Digest: After Art Echo, the show segues into an analysis of that month's topic that my feature guest appearances. (Run time: approx. 5 minutes)
  • 3 Under 3: Before the end of each episode, the audience is left with 3 parting thoughts to ruminate on that episode's topic. (Run time: less than 3 minutes)

literature

Our Literature department will have a publishing service called "Xscape Publishing" that helps authors self publish long form narrative works of poetry, prose, and fiction. By publishing with Rwebel Media, content creators can craft an "xscape," or a blueprint for their creations. Rwebel's founder came up with this idea when she experienced barriers to entry trying to publish her first book. Now, she is a two-time self-published author, and her upcoming novel will be one of the pioneering works in Rwebel's library!
"Revolutionary content. Published by us, created by you." Join us in building an innovative media company that empowers the next generation of creatives.
